Sant Jordi 2026: Experience the festival of books and roses in Barcelona
On 23 April Barcelona celebrates Sant Jordi, a festival unlike any other in the world, combining literature, romance and Catalan tradition. The streets fill with book and rose stalls in a celebration recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The tradition of Sant Jordi
The legend of Sant Jordi tells of a knight who saved a princess from a dragon. From the dragon's blood grew a red rose. That tradition merged with Book Day, creating a celebration found nowhere else.
What to see on Sant Jordi
La Rambla and Passeig de Gràcia
The city's main avenues fill with book stalls hosting author signings, and roses in every colour.
Palau de la Generalitat
The seat of government opens its doors to the public, with long queues that are part of the tradition.
The Gothic Quarter
The narrow medieval streets host second-hand book stalls and independent publishers.
